The Islamic State in Khorasan: Afghanistan, Pakistan and the New Central Asian Jihad is based on a series of research projects carried out by the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) collectively between 2014 and 2021. The author, Dr. Antonio Giustozzi is a PhD and Senior Research Fellow at RUSI Europe, serving on its Terrorism and Conflict team. Dr. Giustozzi has been working on the topic of Afghanistan since the 1990’s and has published extensively on the conflict there. The book is thoroughly sourced using a variety of means, including 174 interviews of those directly or indirectly involved in the conflict, as well as IS media and secondary sources. Secondary sources include external observers and participants and members of organizations allied to IS. Members of Islamic State Khorasan (IS-K) who were interviewed included leaders, cadres, commanders and a few fighters.
